Known as Auli Bugyal in Garhwali, which translates to “meadow”, this gem of a place is hidden in the Himalayan mountains of Uttarakhand, India. Located at an elevation of 2,800 meters above the sea level, Auli is also known as the “Gateway of the Himalayas”. Falling under the Chamoli district, Auli is only 11 kms from Joshimath, the Hindu monastery established by Adi Shankara. The Auli ropeway connecting Auli to Joshimath serves as a transport between the two hubs. Auli is also a hiking and skiing destination for adventure lovers. Nearby places to visit include – Joshimath, Badrinath, Tapovan, Vishnu Prayag and many more. Located in the union territory of Ladakh, it is the joint capital of Ladakh. Lying in a cup-shaped valley in the Pir Panjal Range, Gulmarg staying true to its name hosts a wide variety of flowers in summers and springs. At an elevation of 2,900  meter above sea level, at the confluence of Teesta tributaries Lachen and Lachung Rivers, hidden in the northeast Sikkim is Lachung. Described as the “most picturesque village of Sikkim” in the Himalayan Journal (1855), Lachung is an underrated gen of India. Best places to visit include Yume Samdong ( Zero Point), Lachung Monastery, Yumthang Valley, Lachung River and many more. Lachung hosts its snowfall from October till February, spreading a white blanket across its land.

 

5. TAWANG, ARUNACHAL PRADESH

Falling at the eastern end of India, Tawang is the number one tourist destination of Arunachal Pradesh. The Tawang Monastery founded by Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso by the wish of the 5th Dalai Lama, is said to be the largest Buddhist Monastery in the world outside of Lhasa, tibet. Tawang sees snowfall every year from December to January. Tawang hosts a range of beautiful places to visit like the Sela Pass, Bumla, Lumla, SHonga-tser Lake and many more.

 

6. MANALI, HIMACHAL PRADESH

With geographical and historical significance this town has managed to secure its place in the list of most visited places in India. The best time to enjoy the winter snowfall and snow-capped mountains is from October to February. Manali boasts of many beautiful places to visit like Hampta pAss Trek, Manikaran Sahib, Hidimba Devi Temple, Solang valley  and many more.

 

7. PAHALGAM, JAMMU AND KASHMIR

Pahalgam or Pahalgom, is the starting point of Amarnath Yatra, the annual pilgrimage taking place in the months from July to August. Pahlgam’s religious significance to Hindus make it one of the highly visited tourist places. Its ties to the hindu history ranks it as one of the desired destinations for the people of that faith. Pahalgam Golf Course, also known as Ladder Valley Golf Course hosts championships in summers on its picturesque 18-hole course. 

 

8. SPITI VALLEY, HIMACHAL PRADESH

Spiti translates to the middle land and staying true to its name it is situated between Tibet and India. Spiti Valley comes with a package deal with Tibet on its East, Ladakh on its North, Lahaul on West and Kullu and Kinnaur in the south making it one of the best places to visit. With the climate change happening, the glaciers have been melting faster, and the quantity of snowfall has decreased. Spiti valley might be hosting one of its last snowfalls in  the coming years, and there might not be a better time to visit this beauty. Spiti Valley is an emerging destination for winter and ice sports, trekking and mountaineering.

Surrounded by the Himalayan range, Narkanda is a skiing resort in winter. Winters of this small town are covered in  snow. This town is a must have on the list of tourist places to visit for skiing lovers.

 

10. SONAMARG, KASHMIR

SONAMARG, KASHMIR

Sonamarg, another in the list of “marg’s” translates to meadow of gold. Sonamarg lies high on the list of places to visit for fishers and hikers as this hill station carries rivers and lakes stocked with fishes. Sonamarg hosts occasional snowfall in the winters.
