Himachal Pradesh: Tragedy strikes on the hills of Himachal on Thursday, August 1, 2024, when a cloudburst occurred near a hydro project site in Rampur. Three cloudbursts have been reported so far, including one at Rampur in Shimla and two in Kullu. The cloudburst in Kullu district caused damage in the high mountains of Shrikhand Mahadev. One person was found dead and 32 others are missing after this sudden Cloudburst in Himachal. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap with Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Gandhi, are headed to the affected spot. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Rampur, Nishant Tomar is also going to the spot. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has summoned an emergency meeting in the state secretariat on Thursday to review the Himachal cloudburst situation, according to officials.

The cloudburst caused a building to collapse and be washed away in the Parvati River. The Himachal weather has been in an array since Wednesday night. A midnight cloudburst on Wednesday in Mandi’s Thalatukhod region led to the collapse of houses and disrupted road connectivity. One dead body has been recovered while nine people are still missing. The Air Force, NDRF, and SDRF teams were summoned for assistance by the Mandi district administration. Despite the challenging conditions, they have been working tirelessly. Chamba Deputy Commissioner Apurva Devgan is en route to the affected areas on foot to supervise the relief efforts.

The water level in the Parvati River has risen to dangerous levels due to the severe impact faced by the Malana One and Malana Two power projects. Heavy rainfall has caused some significant damage to the Malana Nallah region of Kullu. The Himachal government has urged the residents along the riverbanks to evacuate to safer locations. Around eight to ten houses, including Patwar Khana, hotels, and shops, have been washed away in the Nirmand area. Ten people have been reported missing in the area. Many bridges have been destroyed and roads closed by the Cloudburst in Himachal, complicating the rescue teams’ efforts to find the missing people.

Shimla cloudburst

Many officials stated that a cloudburst near the hydroelectric power project at Rampur’s Samej Khad also caused widespread destruction. According to the reports, a dozen structures, including a government school building, were damaged due to this Shimla rain. The early Thursday morning Shimla cloudburst caused extensive damage to homes, schools, and hospitals.

He mentioned that the relief operations began immediately, with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Special Home Guard joining the rescue efforts.  A team of officials from the Rampur sub-divisional administration, NDRF, SDRF, CISF, and home guards have been deployed to carry out the rescue operation helping those affected by the Cloudburst in Himachal. To streamline relief and rescue operations against the Himachal weather, a coordination committee chaired by the additional deputy commissioner, comprising the  Sunni Dam management, police, fire brigade, home guard, and other departments, has been established.
