Vijay Sethupathi plays- Maharaja, a barber in Pallikaranai, Chennai, and a father of a small girl named Jothi. As Jothi leaves for a sports camp, Maharaja visits the local police to report a robbery, claiming his dustbin named Laxmi has been robbed by an armed gang who raided his house. The police initially snub the case but later accept it on the promise of a 5 lakh bribe. This forms the basic plot of the movie. The setup is as absurd as it is intriguing? Why is a man reporting a robbed dustbin? What happened with the armed robbers? Why would he invest a bribe as big as 5 lakh for such an insignificant incident? Or was the incident much different than what he claims? These questions arise in the minds of the viewer as one starts watching the film.

The cinematography is handled by Dinesh Purushothaman while Philomin Raj was in charge of the editing. B Ajaneesg Loknath composed the music for the film.
Times Now gave the movie a 3.5/5 and wrote- “Maharaja is a fairly good revenge/investigation drama that primarily works because of fine performances from its entire cast and some exceptional work by its stuntman and stunt choreographer.”
