What is the Women’s Reservation Bill? Why is this bill creating a stir and what kind of discussion will ministers have in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha? Why is a women’s reservation bill necessary? You all must be getting curious to get answers to all these questions. On Thursday, 21st September 2023, The Rajya Sabha passed the Women’s Reservation Bill without creating any objection. In this historic moment, all 215 members of Rajya Sabha have voted in favour of this bill. According to the Constitution’s 128th amendment bill, women should get 33% of the seats in the Parliament and state legislative assemblies.

Arjun Ram Megwal, the Union Minister introduced The Constitution Bill 2023 in the upper house on Thursday after it got approval from a two-thirds majority presented in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. On the 4th day, The Rajya Sabha nodded their approval of the 128th Amendment which is now considered as a historic moment. This news has been shared by Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a tweet. PM Modi called this bill a “defining moment in the democratic journey of the nation.” He showed his happiness over the consensus for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.

The Constitution Bill 2023 is known to be the first bill that got consensus in the new Parliament building. PM Modi shared photos with women MPs after the bill got its approval in Rajya Sabha. He made a caption along these photos that reads, “With the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament, we steer in an era of strong representation and empowerment for the women of India. This bill is not only legislation: it is a tribute to all women who have been working hard to construct a developing nation…”

Factors of Women’s Reservation Bill

The Women’s Reservation Bill which is also known as “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam” is meant to reserve 33% of seats for women in state legislative assemblies, the Delhi assembly, and Lok Sabha. However, this quota would not apply to state Legislative Councils or Rajya Sabha. The main reason behind passing this bill is to promote gender equality in the political landscape of India.

The delimitation process will begin after the pertinent data from the first census has been published, and then the seat reservations will go into force.

Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam bill was passed in Lok Sabha on 20th September 2023 with the support of 454 members and only 2 were opposing it. It was a happy moment for women who were eagerly waiting for the approval of this bill. This bill was pending for over 27 years and finally, it was passed in Parliament during a special session. The bill promotes gender equality in Indian politics by granting women equal access to decision-making, empowering them, and fostering diverse perspectives. It aims to address gender-specific issues, challenge patriarchal norms, and promote comprehensive decision-making in the political arena.

Apart from this, a new question has been raised and people are looking to know the answer when the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam bill will actually be implemented whether it will be implemented in 2029, 2034 or 2039. Besides, Nirmala Sitharaman talked about the bill and called it long overdue on Thursday. After getting clearance from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the bill will now be presented in front of the President for consent. After the consent of the President, the bill will become official. As of now, we have this many details. We are hoping to bring more information till then stay tuned with us and don’t forget to read further articles.
