Zomato Controversial Request

Most parts of India are suffering from heatwave situations. The scorching sun and loo are making it difficult to step outside of their houses and due to that, most people are using online platforms to get items at their doorstep. However, deliverers are suffering most from heatwaves as they are bound to deliver items in the scorching sun and loo. By keeping this fact in mind, India’s popular online food delivery platform has requested netizens which is creating a lot of controversy on social media. Through their official X platform, Zomato requested its customers to place orders when necessary, especially during “peak” afternoons.

Now this post has gone viral on social media and is receiving a lot of backlash. It has triggered divisive reactions among social media users. Social media is divided into sides, one supports the human approach of Zomato towards the delivery partners; while the other side criticised Zomato for “avoiding” delivery.

What Is The Post Of Zomato That Created Buzz On Social Media? 

The viral post of the food delivery platform reads, “Pls avoid ordering during peak afternoon unless absolutely necessary.” As soon as Zomato made the post, it took no time to go viral on social media. It has caught immense attention as users started making comments on it. Most of the comments are bashing Zomato for this post. One of the reactions of a user read, “A food delivery app is avoiding delivery. not a good idea though; instead you should focus on how a delivery partner can avoid heat stroke.”

Another user commented, “Is it even real? Though I appreciate the concern, lunchtime orders cannot be postponed to dinner time. If so, Zomato needs to identify “absolutely necessary” orders and not-so-necessary orders.”

The third user wrote, “Indirectly don’t eat between 2-4 PM unless absolutely necessary.” 

Noteworthy that, On Sunday, 2 June 2024, The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Monday, 3rd June and said that heatwave conditions are expected to hit several areas of the country. IMD said in a given statement that “Heatwave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh on June 3.”

Besides, over the past month, the rising temperature of most parts of India has become the reason for human loss. The reports of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) share the numbers of deceased. As per NCDC, at least 56 people have reportedly died due to rising temperatures that remained between 44-46 degrees in most of the country. In May, 46 out of 56 people died. Furthermore, nearly 25,000 cases of heat stroke have been reported in the country so far and as mentioned above 56 have died. This report also discloses that these cases have been reported from March-May but most of the deaths occurred in May which made it a bad month for the region. 

The temperature in the Capital Delhi and the nearby state of Rajasthan touching 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). 

Besides, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting to review the current heatwave conditions in India on Sunday, 2 June 2024.
