Early Life Of Dhirubhai Ambani

Born on 28th December 1932 in Chorwad, Malia Taluka, Junagadh district, Gujarat, Dhirubhai Ambani was the son of a school teacher, Hirachand Gordhanbhai Ambani and Jamnaben Ambani. He belonged to the Baniya community so it is obvious for him to establish a business. After completing his matriculation from Bahadur Khanji school he went to Yemen to work with his brother at the age of 16. At that time, he was getting Rs, 300 as a monthly salary.
Worked Without Getting Paid
Being born to a school teacher, he was brought up in modest circumstances which taught him the value of perseverance and hard work which of course he used while establishing his business. Before founding Reliance Industries, he worked really hard, in fact, he even worked at a petrol station. He was working as an attendant at a petrol station. The Founder of a billion-dollar company got his first paycheck in the British Colony of Aden at the age of 17. He came to this place in the hope of making a professional career and in this hope, he started working at A. Besse & Co. He worked in this company for a short time but he gained valuable business experience. However, the company did not pay him anything but he learned skills and a business perspective which he later used for his own company.
Entrepreneurial Journey : Starting a Business in India
After working hard in Yemen, he came back to India in 1958. However, at that time, he was only carrying Rs. 500 in his pocket, however his eyes were full of big dreams. Despite having financial constraints, he decided to establish his own firm. However, the journey of laying the foundation of the Reliance Industry was not easy. He managed to get shelter in Mumbai and live with his family in a single-room “Chawl” from where he started trading different kinds of products ranging from fabrics to spices. It took 8 years for him to establish his name in the business industry.
Dhirubhai Ambani laid the foundation of Reliance Corporation in the 1960s along with his cousin Champaklal Damani. Both brothers started their business in a small office at Masjid Bunder. At first, the firm began the business of importing and exporting fabrics and spices. However, it is not easy to carry forward the business in partnership, especially in the same blood. Similarly, the partnership of both cousins broke and they decided to work separately in their respective businesses. This was the beginning of the success story of Dhirubhai Ambani, he learned about the growing demand in the textile industry and sensed the opportunity for business profits in the textile spinning mill named “VIMAL” at Naroda Ahmedabad.
In the same year, in 1996 Reliance Corporation was merged with the name Reliance Textiles Industries PVT LTD in Maharashtra. The first synthetic fabrics mill was established in Naroda, Gujarat. Within 10 years, the annual turnover of the company was reported as Rs. 70 crore and in 1977 the company went public. Reliance Industries held its initial public offering (IPO) in the same year and this issue was supposedly massively subscribed by 7 times. It was reported that most of the equity capital was held by small-town holders.
The Unfortunate Death Of Founder Of Reliance
For the first time, Dhirubhai Ambani suffered from a major stroke in 1986. He decided to hand over his business to both of his sons after his right hand got paralyzed due to the stroke. He suffered from a second stroke on 24th June 2002 which made him hospitalized. He was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital. His health continued to deteriorate and he went into a coma on 6th July. This was marked as his last day on this earth. His unfortunate death brought a shockwave in the business world as well and a dispute emerged in the family as he did not make a proper will. Although he is not among us, the success story of Dhirubhai Ambani is still alive and giving inspiration to millions of people.
